"Hunger Games" director Gary Ross on Jennifer Lawrence's powerful acting: "It's like looking into a blast furnace"

Tell me - how did you get into "The Hunger Games"?
I read the book. My kids turned me on to it, and I went nuts. I guess, about a year ago. I literally read it and said, "I have to make the movie."

And what's been the best part so far?
You rarely get a tentpole that has this much emotional depth, this much character to dive into. The character of Katniss is... incredible. Suzanne [Collins, the author of the books,] did such an amazing job, and painted such a vivid character that I think for me and Jen... It was just exciting every day. Not just from a pure filmmaking perspective, but also just in terms of the depth of the acting and exploring the character.

[...]

You also have Josh Hutcherson in the part of Peeta.
He kind of reminds me of a young Jack Lemmon. There's this incredible versatility to him; he's wise beyond his years, he's sort of mature beyond his years, and there's just such a natural ease to his acting. He's so comfortable.

"Good Morning America" to debut world exclusive of "The Hunger Games" trailer

Lionsgate, a leading global entertainment company, today announced an exclusive partnership with ABC's "Good Morning America" to world premiere the highly anticipated trailer for "The Hunger Games".

The debut will be hosted in person by actor Josh Hutcherson ("The Kids Are All Right"), who plays the pivotal character of Peeta Mellark in the film, in the top rated 8:00 hour of the show on Monday, November 14th. In addition to airing nationwide, the trailer will also be shown in its entirety on Good Morning America's jumbotron in New York City's Times Square.

Foiling Icahn lets Lions Gate promise shareholders "Hunger Games" worth wait

On this August afternoon, the two men watch a 60-second trailer for what they say is their best hope - "The Hunger Games". It's set in a dystopian future where a totalitarian state forces 24 teens to duel to the death on national television.

"Hey, we've got something really special here," says Feltheimer, 60, Lions Gate's co-chairman and chief executive officer. Burns, 53, the studio's vice chairman, praises Jennifer Lawrence, the 21-year-old actress who plays the film’s bow- wielding heroine. "She looks like she could start a revolution," he says.

Game Changer
"We would be disappointed if we didn't make three or four movies," Feltheimer says.

[...]

The high-end forecast [the studio could earn] would amount to three-quarters of the studio's market capitalization of $975 million as of Oct.10. "'The Hunger Games' could be the biggest catalyst for Lions Gate's profits and share price during the next decade," Marsh says. "It could be a game changer for them."

Scores of Facebook Pages

[...]

Burns, a lanky man with a boyish face that belies his taste for corporate combat, says the movie offers Lions Gate that most coveted Hollywood prize: a reservoir of revenue that can be tapped for years. "Everyone is looking for stability in this business, so if the first one works, then you should have three more that work, and you create predictability in a very unpredictable business," Burns says in his rat-a-tat style.

"Too much heat"

Feltheimer, whose chiseled jaw and deep-set eyes could get him cast in a Western, nods in agreement. He says "The Hunger Games" must hit $100 million in domestic box office sales to justify making sequels. "I'm not too concerned we won't get to that kind of number," the studio head says.

He points to an issue of "Entertainment Weekly" magazine on a coffee table. It features two of the film's hunky young stars, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, on the cover. "There's just too much heat for this property around the world," he says.

[...]

Priciest Picture Ever

"We weren't going to let the violence be gratuitous or the selling point of the franchise,” says Shearmur, who oversaw the Bourne series starring Matt Damon while she was an executive at Universal Pictures Ltd. in 2002. "This is an emotional story about a young girl who sacrifices everything and sets off a revolution she never intended."

Drake also pledged that, unlike major studios, which often shelve projects, Lions Gate would make the picture. "We certainly sold the legacy of scripts and great books never seeing the light of day," Drake says.

Let the Games Begin!

For those mourning the passing of the "Harry Potter" cycle and dreading the looming end of the "Twilight" saga, Suzanne Collins has come to the rescue with her spellbinding trilogy of novels, "The Hunger Games", "Catching Fire", and "Mockingjay".

The first comes to movie theaters on March 23. The post-apocalyptic drama takes place in Panem, a North American country that is divided into 12 districts. Every year children between the ages of 12 and 18 must enter their names in a lottery known as "the reaping". Each district selects a boy and a girl to compete with the representatives of the other districts in a televised fight to the death. The final victor wins a life free from want. Collins got the idea for the books from watching footage of the Iraq war and reality television. Adapted for the screen by writer-director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit), the films are positioned to be Hollywood's next big teen franchise.

"My kids turned me on to it, and I went nuts," says Ross, adding, "You rarely get a tentpole that has this much emotional depth, this much character to dive into."

Jennifer Lawrence, who received an Oscar nomination last year for her performance in "Winter's Bone", is Katniss, the heroine, who, when her younger sister gets picked in the reaping, volunteers to take her place. "Katniss is an incredible character: she's a hunter but not a killer, a 16-year-old who's being forced into the arena," says Lawrence. "These kids are killing one another only because if they don't they'll die. It's heartbreaking."

Josh Hutcherson ("The Kids Are All Right") plays Peeta, who has loved Katniss since childhood and who is also chosen in the reaping. "I literally read all three books over the course of five days," he says. "My mind was blown by how much I felt I was like Peeta. We shot in the forest near Asheville, North Carolina - a lot of fight scenes, very physically demanding. Jennifer and I totally hit it off. We're both crazy people - we don't hold anything back."

Ross concludes, "My responsibility was to Suzanne and the readers, to give them the same experience they had when they read the book. I was just so lucky that I had the cast I had."

The young cast of "The Hunger Games"

While the odds may not be in favor of these actors in the arena, they certainly were in the casting room. In what was one of the most-watched casting calls for young actors since "Twilight", auditions for "The Hunger Games" were a battle royale in their own right. Anxious to make the cut, hopefuls went all out: they covered their faces with dirt, put twigs in their hair, and wielded various weapons (including a Nerf crossbow and plastic butcher knife). It was all for the chance to play the "tributes" who fight each other to the death in contests broadcast throughout Panem (the futuristic ruins of North America) in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins's wildly popular young-adult novels. Ultimately, director Gary Ross took a liking to a fresh-faced cast that includes stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth, and a host of new breakout actors. Scroll your mouse over their faces to get the basics on the soon-to-be household names, and read about how they got their highly coveted roles.

JOSH HUTCHERSON
Age: 19.
Hometown: Union, Kentucky.
His role: Peeta Mellark, District 12 tribute - born a baker's son, Peeta is known for his bold personality, creative flair, and sweet nature. He is in love with Katniss and goes to extremes to ensure her survival.
On landing the part: "I got to meet ['Hunger Games' author] Suzanne Collins at the first meeting, which was very exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. But I had a great read-through, and then came back to do a test screening a few weeks later. I also hit it off with Jen - the chemistry between the two of us really worked. A couple of weeks went by where I couldnt say a single word about it... then I got the call. It still didn't even hit me, until I walked on set for the first day."

Hutcherson: Appetite for the "Hunger"

10 Actors to watch 2011: Josh Hutcherson

At 19, Josh Hutcherson has already appeared in nearly 30 films, but none as hotly anticipated as "The Hunger Games". Pic is based on the bestselling dystopian novels by Suzanne Collins, and Hutcherson is set to play the beloved tribute fighter Peeta Mellark.

"Peeta is the closest version of myself that I've ever gotten to play in a movie," Hutcherson says. "His core belief is not letting the world around him change who he is. I have never let anything around me affect what I believe, which is that you treat others the way you want to be treated."

[...]

The busy young actor has always been ambitious. At 9 years old, he called a talent agent in nearby Cincinnati and asked how to get into showbiz.

"I was persistent; some would say annoying," Hutcherson laughs, and adds his first paying job was as an extra in a Bible study video. "I was driven to be an actor because I find people so interesting. I wanted to get inside different perspectives."

Hutcherson never took acting classes, but learned from working with vets such as Donald Sutherland and Stanley Tucci.

"I've watched the greats that have been doing this all their lives," he says, "and how they slip in and out of characters effortlessly."

10 things to know about "Hunger Games"

Already a massive Young Adult success, "The Hunger Games" trilogy has all the makings of a "Twilight"-sized phenomenon. The first of three movies will hit theaters in March, undoubtedly turning Jennifer Lawrence into a star and sending the books straight back into the bestsellers lists.

Before those movies hit theaters, we thought we'd drop some "Hunger Games" knowledge on our faithful readers. After all, when those trailers start airing non-stop, it'll be helpful to know Peeta from Gale, and why exactly Lenny Kravitz is in the movie.

1. In the future, the government will kill your children

For anyone who hasn't read the books, they're set in a post-apocalyptic North America called Panem, which is divided up into 12 districts with each district being progressively poorer than the one before. Every year a lottery is held to send one girl and one boy (ages 12 to 17) from each district to the titular "Hunger Games". The 24 are sent into an arena where they battle to the death with the sole survivor winning fame, fortune and a life of ease.

The whole thing is broadcast across all of Panem and is followed closely by viewers at home. Our heroine, Katniss Everdeen, finds herself fighting in the games when she volunteers to take the place of her younger sister, who is named in the lottery.

2. The story was inspired by war and reality television

As origin stories go, author Suzanne Collins has a good one for her popular trilogy. Apparently she was watching television and flipping through channels between war coverage and a reality show. "I was tired, and the lines began to blur in this very unsettling way," she says. Collins was also inspired by the "Greek myth of Theseus", in which Crete forced Athens to send them 14 young men and women to face their own deaths at the hands of the minotaur.

"Even as a kid, I could appreciate how ruthless this was," Collins says. "Crete was sending a very clear message: 'Mess with us and we'll do something worse than kill you. We'll kill your children.'"

HBO turning "The Kids are All Right" into series pilot

HBO has made a deal to develop the Oscar-nominated comedy "The Kids are All Right" as an hour-long series. Lisa Cholodenko, who co-wrote and directed the Focus Features release, will write the pilot script.

I'm told that it will continue the adventures of the five main characters. They were the same-sex partners (played in the film by Annette Bening and Julianne Moore), their son and daughter (played by Josh Hutcherson and Mia Wasikowka) and the biological father of the kids/sperm donor who surfaces and tears the family apart (played by Mark Ruffalo in the film).

Deals are still being worked out, but Cholodenko will be exec producer alongside the film's original producers, Antidote Films' Jeffrey Levy-Hinte, Gilbert Films' Gary Gilbert and Maven Pictures' Celine Rattray. Cholodenko is repped by Cinetic.

Josh Hutcherson plays "Hunger Games" as New Class hump day hottie

Josh Hutcherson is climbing up the cutie ladder, fast. His work on "The Hunger Games" is already earning him fans (and the film has yet to hit theaters!), plus he's just been awarded the "New Class" superlative "Most Likely To Play A Superhero". We'd love to see him in tights, but until that day happens, we'll award him the also prestigious honor of Hump Day Hottie.

Check out this dreamy photo of Josh and keep reading for more details about him!

Vital stats: Soon-to-be 19-year-old Josh grew up in Kentucky and knew from early on that he wanted to act. So that's what he did. He's also a bit of a up-and-coming ladies man. He's been linked to Vanessa Hudgens, and we have to admit she has the best taste in guys.

Now he's one of our New Class inductees, and he seems pretty excited by it. "It's very nice, especially to be considered with the group I'm in here with, all peers of mine I admire very much," Josh said. "I've been an actor for a long time, so to finally get some recognition from some people that I think are really cool is pretty nice."

Where you might have already seen him: He's been acting for about a decade now and has quite the resume, with roles in films like "American Splendor", "The Polar Express", "Journey to the Center of the Earth", "Bridge to Terabithia" and the Oscar-nominated "The Kids Are All Right".

Why you should take notice of him now: Have we not mentioned enough that he's starring in "The Hunger Games"? Oh, we did? Okay! He's also got a bunch of other projects in the works, including "Red Dawn", "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" and "Carmel".

"Red Dawn" remake to come out next year from FilmDistrict

A remake of the invasion movie "Red Dawn" - with its villains now digitally modified from Chinese to North Korean - will finally hit American shores next year.

The new version of the Reagan-era classic will be released in the U.S. by independent studio FilmDistrict, according to people familiar with the matter but not authorized to discuss it publicly. FilmDistrict is finalizing a deal with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the studio that produced the movie in 2009.

In the original "Red Dawn", a group of teenagers in a Washington town battle invading Soviet forces; in the remake, the invaders were changed to Chinese. But that decision turned the film into a hot potato.

After MGM emerged from bankruptcy in late 2009 and decided it wouldn't release the movie, no other studio wanted to touch "Red Dawn" for fear of offending the government of China, a hugely important market in the increasingly global film business.

As a result, the movie's producers last winter used digital technology and creative editing to change most of the invaders to North Koreans. (Staunchly communist North Korea is economically isolated and not a market for any American products.) Still, it took most of the year to find a distributor willing to take the movie on.

FilmDistrict Chief Executive Peter Schlessel declined to discuss "Red Dawn". Given that final details are still being worked out, however, it likely won't hit theaters until 2012.

The new "Red Dawn" cost about $60 million to produce. It stars Chris Hemsworth, who played the title character in "Thor", and was directed by Dan Bradley, second unit director on the last two "Bourne" movies and the upcoming "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol".

FilmDistrict, which is backed by finance and production company GK Films, launched in April with the horror hit "Insidious". Its most recent release is the Ryan Gosling L.A. noir film, "Drive".

"The Hunger Games" countdown: Panem October is coming!

You asked for more and you're getting it. Panem October is back and gearing up for the official launch. With the October 1st start date fast approaching, the elusive Head Gamemaker, Rowan, agreed to take part in an interview. This is absolutely unprecedented because as cryptic as he is, we got into the details of the conception of Panem October, the situation with Lionsgate, what's to come and so much more. Brace yourselves because Panem October is finally coming and there's a little something you'll need to do to ensure you're prepared.

What made you decide to start Panem October? Was there something specific that triggered the idea?
Alternate-reality games have always been an interest to me and the minute I read "The Hunger Games" trilogy, I knew I had to turn the passion into something amazing for the fans.

How'd you handle it from there? Do you have experience working on these types of projects?
I helped start a small-scale ARG for a different fandom (of which I won't mention for fear of revealing my identity). Getting to know how fans react to various types of material and ways of releasing it has given me an amazing inside look at how viral campaigns truly reach fans and what gets them the most excited.

Were there any concerns at the start in terms of Lionsgate stepping in?
I actually approached Lionsgate's marketing team before our original website went live back in April, and pitched to them the idea and requested that we work together to create something incredible for the fans. Days turned into weeks and I guess it just wasn't in the cards for Lionsgate to be involved. We launched the website shortly after realizing there would be no working relationship and decided to be 100% powered by fan volunteers.

"Hunger Games" could be a game changer for Lionsgate

The franchise could transform the studio, much as "Twilight" did rival Summit Entertainment, by providing reliable income for years from box-office, DVD and digital sales as well as licensing and merchandise.

In "The Hunger Games," 24 teenagers fight to the death in a tournament whose slogan is "May the odds be ever in your favor."

Executives at Lions Gate Entertainment are hoping those words will ring true for them as they gamble on the most anticipated literary adaptation to hit Hollywood since "Twilight" and "Harry Potter." The first of four planned "Hunger Games" films, based on Suzanne Collins' bestselling trilogy, wrapped production in North Carolina on Saturday and will hit theaters March 23.

A successful "Hunger Games" franchise could transform the studio, much as "Twilight" did rival Summit Entertainment, by providing reliable income for years from box-office, DVD and digital sales as well as television licensing and merchandise.

But launching such a movie series won't come cheap. With a budget of nearly $100 million, the first film alone is the costliest production ever for Santa Monica-based Lions Gate, which is best known for low-budget genre fare such as "Saw" and Tyler Perry's "Madea" films along with the occasional prestige movie like "Precious." The studio's movie business is in need of a jump-start, having weathered a number of flops since last year.

With so much at stake, "Hunger Games" will likely be the hottest topic of conversation as investors gather for Lionsgate's annual meeting Tuesday in Toronto.

"There are three things on Lionsgate investors' minds for the next year: 'Hunger Games', 'Hunger Games' and 'Hunger Games'." said analyst James Marsh of Piper Jaffray, who predicted the four movies would generate more than $475 million in profits over six years.

"Hunger Games" cast: Cheat sheet for stardom

1. Choose wisely: This should apply to every aspect of your life, from who you surround yourself with and who you date, to what movies you are thinking of tackling. All of the minutiae of your life is now in full view, and a certain portion of the media loves nothing more than to exploit every misstep. Take a look to your left or right the next time you're in a business meeting or out with friends and ask yourself: "Is this person here for me, or for their own benefit?"

2. Stay (somewhat) private: We've already discussed the nosy media, but now with Twitter and other social media, celebrities can live out every action, thought and event in real time for all of the world to see. Sure, it's a great promotional vehicle, but it's one more trap that is 100% avoidable. Don't want your Twitter account hacked where someone posts nasty things in your name? Well, don't have a Twitter account. If you keep access to yourself somewhat limited, when you do actually have something to say, it makes it that much more powerful. Otherwise, people will get bored with hearing you tell them what you ate for lunch that day and miss the good stuff when you've got it. Plus, it adds a bit of mystery and allure to you.

3. Don't live in Los Angeles: Yes, it's where most movies are made and where all of your agents and associates are. Yes, it's got great weather, killer clubs/restaurants and all that. It also has a cannibalistic, frenzied media who pay their rent by looking to capture your lowest moments. Naturally, not having "low moments" is the more prudent option here, but keeping an apartment in L.A. for work trips and residing elsewhere ('Captain America' himself Chris Evans recently told us he couldn't take L.A. and moved back to his hometown of Boston) will surely minimize the paparazzi hassle.

Why was Steven Soderbergh on the set of "The Hunger Games"? Steven Soderbergh tells us the whole story

I show up in North Carolina, a crewmember Tweets, "Steven Soderbergh's here". And immediately the f*cking firestorm starts. "Why is he here? What's going on? Is the movie in trouble? Is he directing footage from the second one?" All of this crazy-ass speculation. People just spinning off.

The story is really simple. Back in April, [director] Gary [Ross] - who is a close friend of mine I've exchanged creative favors with non-stop over the last 15 years - when he got the boards for the shoot in April called me and said, "Hey, first week of August, I got these two days of second unit. Is there any way you can come down and help me out? Because I'd rather have you do it than hire somebody who I don't know." I said, "Actually, that works out." We'll just be finishing "Contagion" and prepping "Magic Mike" and, yeah, it could be fun.

Cut to two months later, and I show up to do this thing. Of course the whole design of it and what's fun about it, for me, is my job is to come in and duplicate exactly what Gary and Tom Stern, the [cinematographer], are doing. To mimic as closely as I can to their aesthetic. And that's what I attempted to do. But if I've done my job properly, I hope I did, by design, you won't be able to tell what I did. Because it's supposed to cut seamlessly into what they're doing. That's the whole point. That's why he asked me to come down, because he knew that I would be rigorous about matching what they were doing.

"The Hunger Games" - More filming could come to Hildebran?

Filming for "The Hunger Games", which is directed by Gary Ross, is wrapping up, said William Casey, unit publicist for the production, and will finish early this month. The production was in Concord on Wednesday, he said. The movie is expected to be released in March but Casey said no information on where Lionsgate will hold the movie's premiere screening has been released.

As for any additional movies, Casey said only one additional movie in the series has been confirmed so far. He said the company confirmed they have a deal that encompasses four movies but that doesn't mean that four will be made. The only confirmed production beyond "The Hunger Games" is "Catching Fire", Casey said. The release date for "Catching Fire" is Nov. 22, 2013.

No filming locations or start dates for "Catching Fire" have been determined yet, Casey said. If any other films in the trilogy will be shot in North Carolina, no one is saying. Casey did, however, say that part of the second book takes place in a more tropical setting.

Läs listan under bilderna.

"Hunger Games" trailer: 5 must-see scenes

Now that we've had a few days to chew on "The Hunger Games" sneak peek debuted during the MTV Video Music Awards, we're ready to turn our attention to what's next on the menu. Namely, a full-length "Hunger Games" trailer!

Odds are many of you have already formulated trailer wish lists the size of Panem, detailing every little odd and end you'd die to see in the next piece of promotion for the dystopian drama. And you better believe Hollywood Crush has done the same! Feast on our five must-see scenes after the jump!

1. The Reaping
Sure, it's not the most exciting or sexiest moment of Suzanne Collins' trilogy (and we've already gotten a small taste thanks to that production still featuring Liam Hemsworth), but there's no denying this pivotal moment sets the stage for everything that follows. Context. Context. Context.

2. Any scene with Peeta
Jennifer Lawrence was the star of the sneak peek - as well she should have been - and Liam had a cameo in the form of a go-get-em voiceover, but we have yet to see or hear from the baker's son played by Josh Hutcherson. Perhaps we could catch a glimpse of him covered in flour, working in his father's shop. Or being nursed back to health by Katniss in the arena. Or even, perhaps, palming a few poisonous berries...

3. Effie and Haymitch on the train to the Capitol
In one fell swoop, this scene would accomplish three things: We'd get our first official look at Elizabeth Banks flaunting mentor Effie's pink wig; we'd witness her chemistry with Woody Harrelson's belligerent Haymitch AND peek Panem's glistening ruling city.

Gary Ross on "The Hunger Games" perspective

As you know, the Hollywood Crush team has been holding "The Hunger Games" director Gary Ross hostage at our secret underground lair (or, y'know, chatting with him over Skype), in order to get lots of inside skinny on next year's most hotly anticipated book-to-big-screen project. And this time around, we asked Gary about one of the most critical elements of adapting this book for film: getting the right perspective, so that it packs an emotional punch beyond that of a mere, mindless action flick. And once again, Gary proved that he's got an understanding of the book right on a par with its most die-hard fans.

"That's one of the fun things about it," he said. "There are times when you're viscerally inside [Jennifer Lawrence's] shoes, and that's the main experience."

But wait! There's more! Because in addition to being right inside Katniss' head, we're also going to get the experience of being a Panem resident, watching the Games on our own dystopian television.

Gary added, "And there are other times when you're witnessing her the way they're witnessing her in the Game - and she's constantly being watched, which is one of the things that makes the book so compelling. But it's mainly an intense first-person experience, inside Katniss' shoes."

As it should be, since the book is narrated by Katniss herself. And after our latest convo with the talented auteur, we're thinking that the odds are ever in our favor...of really, really liking this movie.

"Hunger Games" VMA first look: Run, Katniss, Run!

The VMA footage dials in on Katniss as she's trying to survive within the Hunger Games arena, where threats from bloodthirsty teenagers, devious game-makers and deadly beasts abound. As she runs, the voice of Gale Hawthorne, her hunting pal from back in the district, echoes in her head. "Listen to me: You're stronger than they are," he says. "You are. They just want a good show. That's all they want. You know how to hunt. Show them how good you are."

But all this is just a taste of what's to come, as director Gary Ross told MTV News earlier this week. "We're still shooting, so unfortunately it's just a teaser. We could only give you a little bit because we're still down here making the movie," he said. "But there's a lot of things to come that I think are going to be hugely epic and very emotional and incredibly powerful."
